Patrol Leaders Meeting

On Thursday 4 February the Troops Patrol Leaders (PLs) got together for a Patrol Leaders Forum. The Patrol Leaders Forum is a meeting of all the PLs with the Leaders and allows the Scouts to put forward any ideas they have on events they would like to see included in the coming programme as well as discuss any problems or improvements to the Troop. This is the first time the current Patrol Leaders have got together to discuss the Troop and things they would like to change. Some of the things they decided upon: - A new scout of the week recognition scheme - Patrol Leaders taking on more responsibility - Their new Assistant Patrol Leaders They decided to get back together in a month to see how well it is working so watch this space.
These two Thursdays saw half the scouts going over to turn moss for widegames. These including big games of hide and seek and capturing the flag. The Scouts returned very muddy and very wet but great fun was had by all! Whilst the other half were out playing widegames the other half were inside doing games and badgework. A number of badges were covered including local knowledge, physical recreation and sports enthusiast. The Scouts also learnt some basic knots including clove hitches, figure of eight and reef knots.
On Thursday 14th and 21st the Scout headed up to Blackburn to go ice skating. There were a few wobbles as people got used to the ice but overall great fun was had!

Cooking Challenge

The first full week at explorer was a cook off challenge. The unit was split into groups and given 15 minutes to go into Tesco and buy food for 2 courses one main and either a desert or starter with only £5. Team MEB were victorious with spaghetti carbonara for the main and a delicious home made chocolate cake. The losers were team diabetes with a strange choice of doughnuts wrapped in bacon and gnocchi in a tomato sauce. The runners up had a delicious stir fry and pancakes with chocolate sauce just pipped by teamwork.

Buddhist Temple Visit

We visited a Buddhist temple in Chorlton to learn about Buddhism.

The Scouts learnt about the religion, asked questions and carried out a 10 minute meditation. Yes they were quiet for 10 minutes!

16 Scout achieved their World Faith badge!!

Climbing and Crafts

This week was a repeat of last week with:

Bulldogs and Wolves creating keyrings from paracord.

Panthers and Lions went climbing.

Both activities tick off part of our creative and adventure challenge badges!

King of Swing!

"Now I'm the king of the swingers
Oh, the Longford VIP
I've reached the top and had to stop
Oh the clove hitch taught me
I wanna make a monkey swing
And swing right into town
And be just like the other Scouts
I'm tired of monkeyin' around!"

Thursday 18 Jan saw the Scouts learn some simple knots including the clove hitch and bow line.

After they learnt the knots it was time to make the monkey swings. The monkey swing only uses one know to make it, the clove hitch, so is a very simple but entertaining piece of pioneering.

The Leaders installed the monkey swings and  the challenge was set - to get across from one side of the room to the other. After much swinging, it was declared a draw between all patrols.

Around the City - Quiz

Thursday 28th saw us meet at Stretford Metrolink station. 20 of the Scouts ventured into town on a very cold evening for a quiz around town.

Sights taken in included Manchester Cathedral, the Town Hall, Oxford Road, Exchange square and the Christmas Markets.

The winning team ended up with bars of Dairy Milk chocolate - well done!!

After a relaxing Christmas break the Scout section has returned. Thursday saw the Scouts go old skool and low tech with a games evening.

The Scouts rotated around different games including: Jenga, Draughts, Twister, Dominoes and Snakes and Ladders. It was a very competitive evening and a great start back to Scouting.

We also welcomed two new members who have moved up from Cubs - Eoin and Charlie!
