Explorers is for young people aged 14 to 18 who want to take the lead, try new challenges and shape their own adventures. It’s where young people build confidence, resilience and leadership skills that last a lifetime.
Explorers plan and run their own activities – from expeditions and international trips to community projects and events. They take on real responsibility, working together as a team and learning from experience.
The Promise
When Explorers are invested, they renew the Scout Promise, committing to do their best and live by Scouting’s values. There are different versions of the Promise so everyone can make one that feels right for them.

Badges and Awards
Explorers work towards a range of badges and top awards, including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards and the King’s Scout Award – the highest youth achievement in UK Scouting. These awards recognise commitment, leadership, and community impact.
Many Explorers also volunteer as Young Leaders, supporting younger sections, developing leadership skills and giving back to Scouting. Volunteering counts towards their awards and builds valuable experience for the future.

Uniform
Explorers wear a beige shirt or blouse with their group necker. The group provides the first necker when they’re invested. Parents buy the shirt and other uniform items from Scout Stores or other suppliers.
Moving on after Explorers
Explorers usually move on in January, after Easter, or at the start of September. Your leader will talk to you about the right next step for you, based on what you want to do next.
After Explorers, young people can:
- Continue volunteering with a section as an adult leader or helper
- Carry on as a Young Leader and take on more responsibility
- Join Scout Network (ages 18 to 25) for more adventure and awards
Network is a District or County level offer for ages 18 to 25 and isn’t part of our group, but we’ll help you find it when the time comes.
