Task Master

This week’s night took inspiration from the Task Master show! We began by timing who could eat a while banana the quickest, times ranging all the way from 22 seconds to 3 minutes! For the next two tasks, we became creative fashion designers by making contemporary looking hats out of anything.... except a hat. Next we grew lots of facial hair, using whatever we could find in our houses to create a beard! After this, we had another creative task where we used Ratty as a model and drew an upside down portrait of him. Lots of Picasso like artwork!! The final task was another food one, testing who was fastest at peeling potatoes, good knowledge for next camp!

Paper Challenge

Due to another lockdown, explorers is back on Zoom for now!

This first week we started with a quiz using knifes, forks and spoons representing our explorer leaders. Questions ranging from who sold football boots to Stephan Ireland to who got a masters degree!

Then we used our engineering skills to use paper to build tall towers, the tallest being a free standing 170cm one, followed by 105cm and 102cm! We also made strong bridges that could support whole trainers. We’ve now all definitely secured futures in engineering and architecture.

Navigation Training

On Sunday 18th October two of our Leaders, Edna and Owen, completed their BNAS (Baloo's Navigation Award Scheme). This covered navigation in the countryside using paths tracks and other linear features. Map interpretation and compass work and gives them a sound footing for future navigation courses, training and development

A big thank you to Mike (Baloo from Cubs) our resident navigation and hiking expert for giving up his time and putting on such a detailed training session.

Return to Young Leadering

Now we have returned to face-to-face Scouting we have started to welcome back our Young Leaders. Young Leaders are aged between 14 and 18 and work alongside adult leaders to ensure that young people really get the chance to shape their own Scouting adventures.

On Sunday 18th our Young Leaders attuned back to Scouting training. As part of the training the Young Leaders were given the essential information to perform their role safely. Some of the young leaders were relatively new to young leadering and some were quite experienced so it was good for everyone to refresh to the same level.

We covered Module A, which provided the Young Leaders with the skills they need to assist with their sections and understand their role as a Young Leader.

We talked about how scouting was structured and chalked up some diagrams with our thoughts.

We also discussed why it’s important to provide activities safely and necessary to carry out risk assessments.

Longford Scouts is an active Scout Group based at the Ranche in Longford Park, Stretford in Manchester. We accept boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 18. We are a registered charity.
