At Longford Scout Group, we believe every young person deserves the chance to try new things, make great friends and discover what they’re capable of.
From building dens and lighting campfires to coding, crafting and climbing, there’s something for everyone here. Scouting helps young people develop skills for life – confidence, teamwork, problem-solving and resilience – all while having a brilliant time.
Whether your child is joining us for their first camp or planning their next big adventure, we’re here to make sure they have fun, feel supported and leave each week with a smile (and maybe a bit of mud on their shoes).
Here are some of the questions parents and carers ask most often:
What do Scouts actually do?
We do a bit of everything! Outdoor adventures, games, crafts, cooking, camping, community projects and plenty of teamwork. One week we might be building shelters, the next learning first aid or designing catapults. It’s always varied, always fun.
When do you meet?
Each section meets once a week during school term time at The Ranche. We also run extra activities, camps and day trips throughout the year – you’ll always get plenty of notice for those.
How much does it cost?
We charge a membership fee that covers running costs, badges, insurance and the running of our HQ. Some events like camps or trips might have an extra cost, but we always keep things affordable. More information can be found in our membership fees policy.
What about uniform?
Every young person wears a section-coloured jumper or shirt (which we’ll tell you where to buy), along with our Longford necker and woggle (which they’ll receive when they’re invested). Sturdy shoes or trainers are best for adventures!
What’s ‘investiture’?
That’s the special moment when your child officially becomes a member of Scouts. They’ll make their promise, receive their scarf and badges, and join the worldwide Scouting family.
Do they have to come every week?
We’d love them to! Regular attendance helps them feel part of the team and get the most from the programme. If they can’t make a session, just let us know via our parent portal.
What about behaviour?
We focus on kindness, teamwork and respect. If someone’s having a tricky time, we’ll always work together with parents to find a positive way forward.
What if my child has additional needs?
Everyone is welcome at Longford Scouts. Just tell us what support your child might need and we’ll do our best to make adjustments. Inclusion and belonging are really important to us.
Is it safe?
Absolutely. All our volunteers are DBS-checked, trained and follow The Scouts’ safeguarding and safety policies. We plan every activity carefully to make sure it’s fun and safe.
Do parents need to get involved?
Scouting runs on volunteers – and we’d love your help! Whether it’s joining the leadership team, helping at an event or lending a hand behind the scenes, there’s a role for everyone. It’s a great way to share your skills (and have a laugh along the way).
How can I find out more or get started?
It’s easy – just fill in our join form and someone from our team will be in touch. You’re also welcome to pop down and see what we do in person!
