Scouts (10½ to 14 years)

Jump in and get muddy. Give back and get set. Scouts ignore the butterflies and go for it, and soon so will you.

Scouts is for young people aged 10½ to 14 who want to challenge themselves, build confidence, and learn real skills for life.

Our Scouts plan and take part in adventures big and small – from camping and expeditions to cooking, navigation, survival skills and community projects. It’s all about teamwork, independence and leadership, in a fun and supportive environment.

Scouts learn to problem-solve, look after each other, and take pride in their achievements – whether that’s lighting a fire, pitching a tent, or helping out locally.

The Promise

When Scouts are ready to be invested, they make their Promise to do their best, help others, and live by their values. There are several versions of the Promise so everyone can make one that feels right for them.

Badges

Scouts earn badges for a wide range of activities including camping, first aid, leadership, and creative skills. Every experience builds confidence and independence. Their top award is the Chief Scout’s Gold Award.

Uniform

Scouts wear a teal shirt or blouse with their group necker. The group provides the first necker when your child is invested. Parents buy the shirt and optional extras from Scout Stores or other suppliers.

Moving on to Explorers

Young people usually move from Scouts to Explorers three times a year – in January, after Easter, and at the start of September. Your leader will talk to you about when moving on is right for your child, based on confidence and readiness as well as age.

When it’s time, they’ll be welcomed into Explorers to continue their Scouting journey.
