Archery
The Scouts recently gathered for an archery evening where they focused on mastering the basics of the sport, emphasizing both safety and skill. While some were experienced archers, others were trying their hand with a bow and arrow for the first time. Regardless of their skill levels, the scouts approached the evening with enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. The session introduced them to essential techniques such as proper equipment handling, stance, and aiming.
After a series of practice rounds, the scouts split into teams for a fun, challenging game where they shot arrows at fruit pictures to create a fictional fruit cocktail. The goal was to hit as many different fruit targets as possible and craft the best fruit cocktail. This activity demanded teamwork, communication, and concentration. The scouts eagerly embraced the challenge, and the competition was fierce as they aimed to build the most creative fruit concoction.
Hebden Indoor Camp
At the start of March, the scouts embarked on an indoor camping trip to the Hebden Hey Scout Camp. Traveling in two minibuses, the group arrived on Friday evening and immediately set to work, organizing their bunk beds before heading out to explore the campsite. They capped off the night with hot dogs and a movie.
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast of sausages and beans, the scouts jumped into a day packed with outdoor activities. They worked together to light fires and refine their axe-throwing skills before embarking on a hike through the beautiful countryside, honing their navigation abilities. The day ended with a satisfying spaghetti bolognese dinner and a large campfire.
Saturday's agenda featured archery and further axe-throwing practice, giving the scouts a chance to enhance their target sports skills.
On Sunday morning, a breakfast of bacon butties fueled the group for the day's tasks. They tidied up the campsite, packed their gear, and some ventured into Hebden Bridge for souvenirs and treats. The trip offered a wonderful opportunity for the scouts to bond, improve their teamwork, and embrace the beauty of the great outdoors.
Situated in the heart of Calder Valley, the Hebden Hey Scout Camp (filming location for the BBC's Happy Valley) provides a breathtaking backdrop for outdoor adventures. The success of this event is a testament to the dedication of the scout leaders who meticulously planned and organized it, ensuring the scouts had a memorable experience.
In summary, the scouts thoroughly enjoyed their time at the Hebden Hey Scout Camp. They engaged in a range of activities, learned new skills, and strengthened their team bonds. This event highlighted the value of outdoor adventures in fostering teamwork, leadership, and a love for nature.
Fires
Under the guidance of the scout leaders, the scouts diligently gathered dry tinder, kindling, and fuel wood from the surrounding area, learning to identify the most suitable materials for fire-making. With patience and persistence, sparks flew as they struck the flint against the steel, igniting the tinder nest they had carefully prepared.
Throughout the evening, the scouts nurtured their fledgling fires, gradually building them up to roaring blazes that provided warmth and light. Each scout took turns tending to the flames, honing their skills in fire management and safety practices.
Navigation
Over the past month our Scouts have been out and about in Longford park, compass in hand and waterproofs all over. Although it may have been wet and soggy, all our Scouts successfully navigated around our orienteering course! But how you ask? Scouts were each given compasses and a series of bearings (not the metal ones though!). Once split into groups Scouts had to locate each hidden letter in the park by taking a directional bearing to guide them in the right direction; then counting steps to understand how far they've walked. These are valuable skills to have while walking as it allows Scouts to locate their position in the dark, mist, and heavy rain.
This activity is all in aid of the group working towards their navigator badges. In addition to the orienteering course we've had Scouts learning to read OS maps, understand grid references, and how the weather might affect your hike. Well done to all everyone who has taken part!
Hobbies
The scouts had an exciting opportunity to showcase their unique hobbies and interests in a recent meeting with their leaders. The scouts brought in their collections, model-making projects, musical instruments, and skateboards to share with their peers and scout leaders. The scouts had the chance to talk about their passions, show off their skills, and discuss their interests.
The scouts were enthusiastic about sharing their hobbies and the Leaders were impressed by the variety of interests, which ranged from collecting rocks to playing instruments, and it was clear that the scouts had put a lot of effort into their hobbies. The activity was also an excellent opportunity for scouts to learn from each other and ask questions. Overall, it was a fantastic event that encouraged scouts to embrace their unique talents and hobbies.
