Scouts recently took on a hands-on challenge by learning how to make paracord survival bracelets – a practical skill that combines creativity with outdoor preparedness.
The activity introduced Scouts to the purpose and uses of paracord in survival situations, from building shelters to making emergency repairs. They explored how a simple bracelet can hold several feet of cord, ready to be unravelled and used when needed.
After a demonstration of the technique, Scouts selected their cord colours and began practising the cobra weave – a popular knotting pattern for bracelets. The process involved focus, coordination, and attention to detail, with each Scout following step-by-step instructions to create a durable, wearable tool.
The session also included a short discussion about the different types of paracord, breaking strength, and how to use the bracelet in real-life scenarios such as first aid or securing gear on camp.
By the end of the activity, each Scout had completed their own bracelet to take away – a reminder of both their new skills and the value of being prepared.
