Recently, our Scouts rolled up their sleeves and got to grips with a key Scouting skill – pitching canvas patrol tents!
As part of our ongoing outdoor skills programme, the Scouts learned how to work together to pitch the classic green patrol tents that many of us remember from our own Scouting adventures. These canvas tents are larger, more durable, and quite different from modern pop-up shelters – and they come with their own unique set of challenges and rewards.
During the session, the Scouts discovered how important teamwork is when it comes to getting the tent up properly. Each group took turns leading different parts of the process – from laying out the canvas and sorting the poles, to tensioning guy lines and checking everything is square.
They also learned about the benefits of canvas tents – their strength in bad weather, the space they offer, and the sense of tradition they bring to camp.
