Squirrels is the very first step in the Scouts journey, for children aged 4 to 6. It’s a great place to start new adventures, make friends, and learn about the world through play, fun, and creativity.
Each week, Squirrels enjoy short, active sessions filled with stories, games, and mini challenges. They learn about teamwork, kindness, and curiosity while building confidence in a safe and supportive space.
Our sessions encourage trying new things, exploring outdoors, and helping each other. Whether it’s a craft project, a short walk, or learning about nature, every activity helps young people discover something new about themselves and the world around them.
The Promise
When Squirrels are ready to be invested, they make their Promise – a simple version about doing their best and being kind. There are different variations of the Promise, so everyone can make one that feels right for them.

Badges
Squirrels can earn lots of badges by joining in, trying new activities, and helping others. Badges celebrate effort and curiosity, not just achievement. Over time, they can work towards the Chief Scout’s Acorn Award – the top award for Squirrels.
Uniform
Squirrels wear a red sweatshirt and their group necker to show they’re part of Scouts. The group will provide the first necker when your child is invested. Parents buy the sweatshirt and any extras, such as a polo shirt, from Scout Stores or other uniform suppliers.
Moving on to Beavers
Young people usually move from Squirrels to Beavers three times a year – in January, after Easter, and at the start of September. Your leader will talk to you about when moving on is right for your child, not just based on age or school year.
When it’s time, they’ll be welcomed into Beavers to continue their Scouting adventure.
